Enzi Files Topline Numbers to Establish FY 17 Senate Budget Framework
WASHINGTON D.C. – Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY), Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, today filed the topline spending numbers agreed to in the Bipartisan Budget Act (BBA) of 2015 last fall, which allows the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee to enforce the Congressional Budget Act of 1974 and points of order. This language also allows the Senate Appropriations Committee to begin its work on annual spending bills immediately.
“Congressional passage of the spending deal last year made top-line numbers and budget enforcement features available this year so that a regular order appropriations process can move forward while we continue to discuss broader budget challenges,” said Chairman Enzi. “My top priority is a better budget process that allocates taxes from hardworking families effectively and efficiently. It is time to make the process fit the problem.”
Last fall, Congress approved the BBA containing authority for the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee to enforce the Congressional Budget Act of 1974 and points of order. The language in the BBA stated that the topline numbers could be filed anytime between April 15, 2016, and May 15, 2016. The BBA filing does not preempt future Senate consideration of a budget resolution.
The topline numbers filed in accordance with the BBA can be viewed here.
Section 102 of the BBA, which lays out the process to file the topline FY 17 numbers, can be viewed here.
