Chairman Patty Murray's Statement on Senate Passage of Government Funding Bill

Washington, D.C.—Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, released the following statement after the Senate passed a bill that would prevent a government shutdown and fund the government at current spending levels through November 15th.

“Now that the Senate has passed a clean short-term funding bill, the only thing that can cause a completely unnecessary government shutdown is another Tea Party temper tantrum in the House. House Republicans need to stop playing political games with families and the economy, pass the Senate’s shutdown-prevention bill without any new gimmicks or Tea Party panders, and then join us at the table so we can work toward the balanced and bipartisan long-term budget deal the American people expect and deserve.”

Yesterday, Murray spoke on the Senate floor urging her colleagues to end the Tea Party brinkmanship. Murray talked about the impact a shutdown would have on families and the economy in Washington state and across the county. And she made it clear that repealing or delaying health care reform is not going to happen.

Earlier this week, Murray released a statement on the short-term spending bill and the need for Congress to get past this crisis and work together on a long-term budget deal that replaces sequestration in a fair and responsible way.
