Merkley: House Republicans Are Betraying Middle-Class Families by Advancing Senate Republicans’ Budget Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, released the below statement following House Republicans’ vote to advance Senate Republicans’ budget resolution.

“After all their concerns around the Senate Republicans’ budget resolution, House Republicans bent the knee to President Trump and advanced this resolution that will slash programs that help families thrive to fund massive tax breaks for billionaires. This is not only immensely unpopular in the eyes of the American people, but it is also extremely detrimental to programs – like Medicaid and SNAP – that middle-class families rely on.

“This is the Great Betrayal of American families. As Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, I will do everything I can to stop Republicans from placing this unfair burden on hardworking families, all to ensure their billionaire buddies pay less in taxes,” said Ranking Member Jeff Merkley.
