Merkley Launches Whistleblower Portal for Public, Private Sector Workers to Report Wrongdoing, Illegal Activity
Oversight Will be Conducted by Merkley’s Budget Committee Staff
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, unveiled a new portal for public and private sector workers to report known waste, fraud, and abuse at their place of employment.
As the Trump Administration continues to blatantly ignore the law by impounding funds or attempting to subvert Congress’s power of the purse, this portal will allow the committee to hear directly from federal workers and others who are witnessing or have knowledge of this illegal activity. Whistleblowers have long played an important role in ensuring Congress can serve as a check on the Administration’s actions in addition to preventing fraud and abuse of power in the private sector.
“Since President Trump took office, the Administration has made several consequential decisions to radically change the federal government, including canceling programs, suspending grants, clawing back money, reorganizing departments, and firing federal employees. Many of these actions have occurred without Congress’s approval and in direct violation of the law and the Constitution. The President is not a king, and we will make sure he is held accountable” said Ranking Member Merkley.
The Senate Budget Committee is responsible for overseeing and enforcing rules surrounding spending, revenue, and the federal budget. Submissions through the whistleblower portal will be monitored by Sen. Merkley’s staff on the Committee. Those aware of illegal actions by a public or private entity are encouraged to come forward.
