Enzi named to joint Senate-House conference committee to finalize tax reform bill

Washington, D.C. – Senate Leadership appointed U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and a senior member of the Finance Committee, to the conference committee that is tasked with negotiating a final tax reform bill.

The House and Senate have each passed their own respective versions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, but a final bill must pass both chambers of Congress before it can be sent to the president to be signed into law.

Enzi said he was honored to be named to the committee and looks forward to helping finalize a bill he believes would lower taxes for hardworking Americans, grow the economy, create more jobs and modernize our tax code.

“I am excited to join my colleagues on this conference committee to move tax reform legislation to the next step. I believe it will help millions of people across the country by letting them keep more of the money they earn,” Enzi said. “Our job will be to find the best parts from the tax reform legislation already passed by the House and the Senate and put it all together. Both bills include great ideas to grow the economy, encourage companies to invest their money in the United States, create jobs and raise wages.”

Enzi cautioned that efforts to significantly alter, add or make changes that were not part of either the House or the Senate package would make the conference committee’s job harder and therefore passage of the final bill more difficult. He said Congress will continue to work on other tax measures even after passage of this legislation.

Other Republican senators selected for the conference committee include Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, John Cornyn, R-Texas, John Thune, R-S.D., Rob Portman, R-Ohio, Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Pat Toomey, R-Penn.

Members of both the House and the Senate have said they would like to have tax reform legislation signed into law before the end of the year.
