Washington, D.C. – During a conference committee meeting today between the Senate and House to finalize tax reform legislation, U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., applauded the work that has already been done but stressed the importance of getting the bill over the finish line to help hardworking Americans.
“This is an important day, as we take another step closer toward enacting historic tax reform legislation that will help boost America’s economy,” Enzi said. “Our efforts here and over the past two months are focused on moving Congress toward tax reform that will make the system simpler and fairer and put more money in people’s pockets. This will also help grow the economy, create more jobs and raise wages for hardworking families.”
Enzi noted it has been roughly 30 years since America last reformed its tax code and said globalization, the emergence of new technologies and the changes in our labor force make it necessary to modernize our tax code to meet these changes.
“It is past time for us to act to modernize our tax code so that our nation can remain competitive in a 21st century economy,” Enzi said. “Our current code is an outdated mess that is hurting American workers and holding our economy back. That is why we need tax reform that will ensure the competitive footing of our businesses, make our system simpler and fairer, and allow people to keep more of what they earn.”
As a former small business owner, accountant, Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee — which was charged with writing the Senate tax reform bill — Enzi said he had confidence that tax reform would help Wyoming families.
“Our country needs tax reform and, most importantly, hardworking American families need it. They deserve to have the opportunity to make more choices about how their hard-earned money should be used,” Enzi said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to help pass a final bill that will not only benefit hardworking Americans, but would make our economy and country stronger.”
